Grandma Pruit’s Vinegar Pie

Ingredients 2 cups sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pastry for double-crust pie 1/2 cup butter, cubed 2/3 cup white vinegar 1 quart hot water

Directions Preheat oven to 450°. Mix sugar, flour, and nutmeg; put aside. Slice one-third of pie dough into 2x1-inch strips after rolling it into a 1/8-inch circle on a lightly floured board.

Sprinkle half the sugar mixture over half the strips in a deep 12-inch enamel-coated cast-iron pan or ovenproof casserole. Dot with half butter. Layer sugar and butter again.

Roll remaining two-thirds circle of pie dough to 1/8-in. thick. Place over filling and push against skillet or casserole sides.

Cut top slit. Pour hot water and vinegar through slit slowly. Normal liquid bubbles through crust. Foil an oven rack to catch drips.

Bake crust for 1 hour till golden brown. You can loosely foil the edge in the last 15-20 minutes to prevent overbrowning. Remove foil. Wire-rack cool.
